Usually scar tissue (fibrous tissue) grows over wound to protect the area. May affect any part, but usually earlobes, chest, shoulders, and cheeks. Disorders affecting any body system have potential integumentary manifestations. Systemic disease states shown through altered colour, sensation, texture, and tem- perature of skin hair, and nails. Redness (erythema: generalized, as with carbon monoxide poisoning, or localized, as with rashes or with inflammation, in dark skinned people may appear brown. Jaundice (yellow: altered bilirubin metabolism, usually causes by liver disease, in dark skinned people check sclera and hard palate. Poor oxygenation: cyanosis, pallor, or coolness, pale in dark-skinned people. Itching (pruritis: initial symptom in atopic eczema, allergic contact dermatitis, scabies, psoriasis, and varicella, the itching never goes away due to the liver and kidney not being able to process waste properly. For fluid excess (edema), indents easily from moderate finger pressure. For decreased fluid (dehydration), see tenting of skin; decreased turgor.
