Document Summary

Lecture 5: neurobiology of normal aging (jan 18/16) Normal aging and genes, enviro, telomeres, and brain. Life expectancy at 60 years: in various countries: social 2) biological 3) psychosocial. Has led to an increase in older (>65 yo) individuals. People 85 yo or older = greatest growing segment in our society. Note: none of the above are related to diseases. General consensus: normal aging = inevitable process for all multicellular organisms, governed by two factors 1) gene and 2) enviro. Three lines of evidence indicate that aging is governed by genetic factors: Life-span differences b/w different inbred strains of lab animals (even if kept in same environments for all their lives) Life-spans of human monozygotic twin pairs are similar to each other than that of dizygotic twins. Id of genes in fruit flies, nematode worms and yeast that affect duration of life: if modify the genes, can increase/decrease lifespan: somatic maintenance and repair, longevity assurance.
