Broader term: non-western music, music of indigenous musicians. Narrower term: a form of sonic neocolonialism where english-speaking marketing executives label and exoticize the sound of the non-western world. (brabazon 188) World music is a marketing term with its origins in the 1980s, intending to brand foreign" sounds for a western" consumer. Cui jian: the father of chinese rock. The june 4 incident (aka tiananmen square protests) Major causes: death of hu yaobang, economic inflation, political corruption. Advocating: a party with corruption, social equality, speech/press freedom. After failed conversation, the government: sent troops, declared martial law, opened fire to civilians. Consequences: many died (figure unknown, restricted news coverage, some protest leaders got purged, protesters arrested, setback in society.
