How was inflammation described: calor, rubor, tumor, dolor, functio laesa. Definitions: reaction of the body against injury. Cohnheim: thought that it must be found in the vessels. Virchow: started using scientific methods applied to causes of infections by germs and viruses. Inflammatory reaction is consequence of excessive intake by interstitial cells, of food prominent from the liquid part of the blood, filtering through the vessel wall not quite yet. Cells found in inflammatory exudates originate from the blood (exudates: fluids from areas of swelling) weigert.
