The great fur rush and the missionary impulse. The crown decided the way to make money off the fur trade was to sell of a monopoly. The company that paid the monopoly would have colonies in order to prevent other companies from stealing the fur trade. First colony was in port royal for convenience (easy to get to the ocean) Unfortunately, it doesn"t defend the entrance into the st. lawrence river. Champlain"s cartographer tells him to put a post at the narrow of the st. lawrence river so champlain makes a post that is quebec in 1608 firmly establishes new france. France invention didn"t need land or labour, both sides had something to gain (co-operative) The natives would receive pots and pans and other things for the exchange of furs to the fur traders, this was a peaceful settlement and a co-operative venture. The french invention was not without conflict with the natives although.
