Qu"ran should decide, the decision was that neither mu"awiya and ali should be caliphate. Death of ali brought more factions, and the question of succession. Hasan pressured by mu"awiya to step down , which he does step down. Mu"awiya becomes leader and moves capital to demaskus (their position of strength) Should not be family ruling, so hussein was considered to make leader. Hussein was going to battle with yezid , hussein was ambushed. Successor can be anyone with a good character.
