Individuals & activities have always congregated in cities to facilitate communication and minimize the cost (in terms of time, effort & money) of interaction . Narrow definition: the process whereby an increasing proportion of a society"s population resides in urban areas. In 1800, 2% of the world population lived in cities; in 2005, the figure passed 50% Due to natural increase, and rural-urban migration. Globally, 1 million people/week move to cities; 60% of world population will be urban by 2025. Moving closer to be near schools, hospitals, opportunities. Now, there are ~500 cities in the world >1m. Urbanization is about much more than numbers (proportions) of people - it"s also about building complex systems. Anthropologists have excavated & analyzed ancient city sites. Location: present-day west bank (palestine) -- on banks of river jordan.
