May have multiple hypotheses initially: test hypothesis to prove or disprove. These test duplicate what is wrong with the textile to prove hypothesis. Do writing to describe what has occurred and assign responsibility to certain procedures. Use knowledge of textiles and cleaning to determine problem, and any resources available. Some problems are impossible to solve, or require destructive testing and unavailable resources. With cleaning we try to minimize damage occurring.
