Document Summary

Terms are often used interchangeably, but are not synonymous. Wear is a much broader term than abrasion, refers to all types of deteriorating actions both mechanically and chemically. Abrasion is a speci c type of wear; rubbing action involving relative motion b/w one material and another. Caused by frictional interaction at molecular level b/w the fabric and abradant. In ex abrasion, frictional interaction occurs between bres in the textile. Occurs when a hard abradant rubs a softer textile. Occurs when the abradant displaces, ruptures and removes bres. A ect of abrasion is both visual and mechanical. Frosting: broken bre ends on the surface disperse the re ected light, giving a dulled appearance to the fabric. Loss of colour: gradual removal of well-dyed exterior bres may reveal paler inner bres of yarns. Lower resistance to tearing under the normal stresses applied to use.
