Document Summary
We need to focus on family structure to heal/treat families. Family structure = predictable sequences; organized pattern in which families interact; set of rules governing behaviour patterns. Once patterns are established >>> families use only portion of those behaviours available to them. Once patterns are set >>> predictability of behaviour sequences. Reciprocal & complementary functions ex) parental involvement w/ children, over vs under >>> will know there is a problem with family structure. Family subsystems = members of a family join together to perform various tasks. Often formed based on the patterns of interaction in a family. Patterns of interaction are largely based on family roles and rules. Covert coalitions are often more signi cant than obvious groupings. Family boundaries = emotional barriers that serve to protect the separateness and autonomy of the family. Permit little contact with other systems resulting in disengagement. Disengagement promotes independence but limits warmth and affection.
