Document Summary

Lecture 19 & 20: colour & its measurement. Colour of textiles is very important to most consumers. Sometimes the most important criteria in purchasing decision. Colour speci cation, matching and the colourfastness properties of textiles are all important concerns for textile manufacturers. Subjective methods of colour description are not adequate for clear colour communication. There is no simple answer, since it is not a physical reality. Colour is in the brain rather than the material. It is an interpretation of sensations detected by the eye. The material itself interacts with certain wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation to which the eye is sensitive. Only a narrow band of the total electromagnetic spectrum is perceptible to the human eye and this is what we call light. Our visual senses respond to radiation from ~ 400nm to 700nm ~ known as the visible spectrum.
