We think of cm, mm and km as being actual amounts, but we should think of them as multiples or fractions of the base unit. Conversion if the pre x is a fraction of the base unit to convert fraction to base unit, multiply by the table value. To convert base unit to fraction unit, divide by table value. If the pre x is a multiple of the base unit, the method is basically the same. Signi cant gures in a result are those gures with some known degree of reliability. Non signi cant - leading zeros to the left of the sig dig. Ambiguous zeros at the end of a number that are not to the right or a decimal point, may or may not be signi cant. 3500 (2, 3, or 4) use scienti c notation to clarify.
