Signs of di erence - the zoot suit and social disorder. Zoot suit powerful symbol which got banned after riots. Racial/ethnic categories do not align with genetic and biological science. They are culturally and socially constructed categories and they have history (not a very pretty one in most cases) Racial/ethnic identity as performed through dress is always meaningful in relation to other categories in the racial/ethnic identity spectrum. Racial/ethnic identity as performed through dress is ever-evolving and depends on context (in terms of how it will be interpreted and perceived) Racial/ethnic identity is often entangled with other dimensions of identity (national, gender, cultural, class, age) Assimilationist: advocation of race or cultural to be absorbed into another. The chicano political movement resisted this movement and was oppositional. Style/style politics: an expression of di erence via style. Indolence: sloth-like; how pachucos/pachucas were perceived through their dress, even though it was not the reality of their lifestyle.
