Its always in relation to the music (there are specific counts and timing) Early dances: branle - the brawl - fnrech tern for folk dance accompanied by singing. Its modified form came from louis xiv"s court and became connected to ballet and pantomime. Low dance was the most popular dance in the 15 and 16th century. Couples move quietly and gracefully in a slow gliding motion, raising and lowering their bodies. It was a formal dance in duple time (binary division) in italy, france and spain in the 16 + 17. The dance is a sedate and dignified style. The woman had a huge train that was part of the dance. Pavane = peacock, because the women sweep their train like a peacock: galliard.
