Development during archaic period of unique militaristic society. Sparta = physical city; lacedaemon (political unit of city and territory); laconia (territory) Spartiates = citizens with full political rights; lacedaemonians = free population of lacedaemon. Elites constantly feared a helot uprising (more than the elites) Little/no focus on large building, decor, art, etc. ; focus on military power (and keeping power within through xenophobia) Conquest of laconian plain (before mid 8th c. ) results in 2 subject classes. Perioikoi ( dwellers around ): free but no political rights; local autonomy; engage in trade and commerce for spartans. Helots: property of state; work land and turned over fixed percentage of produce to spartans. Spartans take over fertile plain to west. Inhabitants of messenia become helots (visibly different) Division of land after war results in conflict in spartan society only overseas settlement (taras) Possible antecedent - battle of hysiae 669/8. Sparta (trying to expand to northeast) is defeated by argos (pheidon)
