Class 254 september 6, 2016 : greek art and archaeology lec 1. Geography and climate: greece, and around the mediterranean. Trying to figure out the mindset of people of the past. They left behind a lot of physical objects, as well as a lot of text. The ancient greeks believed that their world was flat. Above the sky, below the underworld. This was what the known world looked like to the ancient greeks. Plato said that the greeks lived like frogs around a pond; the central part of their world was the mediterranean sea. It provided people to move from island/coast to island/coast. Centrality was around athens, but greeks also colonized italy around the 7th century bc, as well as france (marsailles), spain, egypt, turkey, africa, and many more places in the 6th/7th century. Along the coasts of the black sea as well; generally spanded across a large geographic area.
