How do we retrieve our primary sources: excavations, archaeology is the destruction of archaic. Excavations: an important part of excavation is cleaning, always cleaning your territory. Documentation: writing fown what you find and see. Hellenistic house plan: 15x20 meter house. But archaeologists do not only excavate: artefact processing: 90% of what you find is pottery. But archaeologists do not only excavate: archaeological surface survey, fieldwalking, geophysical survey incl. remote sensing (lidar, satellite photography etc, pros: Dating: relative dating vs absolute dating, establishing chronologies: change, relative. The temporal order of things: relative dating: Actual chronological date assigned allows measurement of how much" time has passed between two points: sequencing based on stratified deposits, grouping of painters and identifying workshops. Older, younger, later, earlier: absolute dates: Islamic calendar from a. d. 622 (the hegira, mecca to medina) Time span: what kind of time span do sites represent, what are you looking for in terms of dates? not single period (ie single moment) sites!
