CLASS221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Satyr Play, Delian League, Coryphaeus
Document Summary
Tragedy is probably the most familiar genre of greek literature, most similar to anything we have now, these plays are still performed. We don"t really know what the plays would have looked like, based off accounts from then. Three main playwrights: aeschylus, sophocles, and euripides - became classics instantly. Mix of song and dialogue: believe the chorus came first and the chorus leader developed to a dramatic character (this starts in the mid 6th century) Since there were large audiences it was hard to see or hear. This resulted in a lack of fine detail, masks with big facial expressions, and platform shoes to emphasis height. Relatively simple form of theater, though with a singing-dancing component and considerable spectacle. Always have a chorus (sings in between scenes) and at most three actors (all male, even in female roles) Not much physical action, except chorus dancing, limited stagecraft. Meant audience knew the gist of the story, but wouldn"t know the details.
