Introduction the benzodiazepine class of psychoactive drugs. Clonazepam (klonopin) is a small organic molecule drug first synthesized by the pharmaceutical company hoffmann-la roche in 1962. It was patented in 1964 and marketed in. 1975 after receiving approval from the u. s. food and drug administration (fda). It is a member of similar neuropharmacologic properties including sedation, muscle relaxation, anticonvulsant effects, and anxiety reduction. 1 the core chemical structure of benzodiazepines consists of a seven membered 1,4-diazepine ring fused to a benzene ring. These rings can be substituted with a variety of functional groups, which gives rise to the multitude of known benzodiazepine compounds with different physiochemical properties. 2"-chloro substituted classical benzodiazepine with a systematic name of 5-(2-chlorophenyl)-7- nitro-1,3-dihydro-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one.
