BIOL208 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Log-Normal Distribution, Red Queen Hypothesis, Biological Pest Control
Document Summary
In situations of strong evolutionary pressure, evolution can occur quickly. Algal strains in the presence of a predator. This leads to a shift in gene frequency in a population. Predation can lead to a shift in gene frequency. Algal blooms: those that grew fastest without a predator grew the slowest with it: the trade off between competition and defense. Areas with little predation will have more competitive prey. Areas with more predators will have better defended prey. When predators and prey evolve together, it is called coevolution. Red queen hypothesis: organisms must constantly evolve, not just for better reproduction, but just to survive in an increasingly competitive world it takes all the running one can do just to keep in the same place . Stable cycling (like the rabbit and the hare, which we"ve already seen) Enemy release hypothesis: releasing new organisms into new areas is extremely ecologically damaging.
