4 or more erupt in 6-8 weeks. Purpose: to bite off grass or hay. Should be even and parallel to the ground. Upper and lower should touch at rest. Have to be level to maintain normal molar occlusion. Mandible moves to side for molar contact. Horses do not normally chew up and down. 3 premolars per arcade: have baby teeth. 3 molars per arcade: no baby teeth. Outer edges and inner edges get sharp points. Teeth grow until eruption into wear (root develops) Teeth erupt until the root is reached (teeth get worn down to the roots) Malocclusions: excessive transverse ridges, hooks, ramps, tall molars. Abnormal wear: wave or step mouth, fracture or chipped teeth, gingivitis, soft tissue injury from sharp teeth. Subtle lameness, include oral exam in lameness exam. Refuses to maintain frame or vertical head carriage. 2x/year for young horses: annual after 8-9 years, twice a year for performance horses. Essential for examining and treating dental oral problems.
