Document Summary

Lecture 13: what is population: population: individuals of same species that co-occur together in space and time (same physical area and same life time, characteristics of a population: Distribution is limited by physical environment (can only live in areas where niche requirements are fulfilled) All species can"t live in all places: they have limited energy and resources (energetically favourable to adapt to a narrow range of environmental variables, it takes extra energy to survive and reproduce where environment is not favourable. Random: individuals have an equal chance of living anywhere within an area (neutral interaction) Regular/ even: individuals are uniformly spaced (negative interaction- competition for resources or local depletion of resources) Clumped: individuals have higher probability of being in some area compared to other areas (beneficial interactions- sharing resources and limited dispersal) Large scale distribution: there is significant environmental variation over the scale. Absolute density: the number of individuals of a population per unit area.
