Microclimate: the climate of a very small or restricted area, especially when this differs from the climate of the surrounding area. Macroclimate: the overall climate of a region usually a large geographic area: macroclimate +local landscape= microclimate. Landscape features that influence microclimate: because atmospheric pressure decreases with elevation, air rising up the side of the mountain expands. The energy of motion (kinetic) required to sustain the greater movement of air molecules in the expanding airmass is drawn from the surroundings. Temperature are generally lower at higher elevations is that there is less atmosphere to trap and radiate heat back to the ground. Northern aspect: face north, shaded in northern hemisphere. In northern hemisphere, the northern aspect will be cooler than the southern hemisphere. The shaded areas are on the north-facing sides, or northern aspects, face away from the equator.
