BIOL208 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Hydrothermal Vent, Hydrogen Sulfide, Divergent Boundary
Document Summary
Bio 208 lecture 10 monday, january 29, 2018. Heterotrophs: herbivores: organisms that eat plants, carnivores: organisms that eat animals, detritivores: organisms that eat nonliving (dead) organic matter, omnivores: eat both plants and animals, mixotrophs: can eat things for energy but can also photosynthesize. Omnivory: some organisms exploit more than one carbon source, omnivores get energy from both plants and animals, mixotrophs can gain energy from photosynthesis and from consuming organic and inorganic matter, includes algae. Energy limitation in animals: functional response: relationship between food availability and feeding rate. In animals, relationship between food density and food intake levels off at some point, just like plants and photosynthesize. What influences feeding rates: animals can only physically shove so much food in their mouths, takes time to handle and process food. It takes time to digest food and make room for more new food.
