BIOL208 Lecture 4: Biology 208 Lecture 4
Document Summary
Biome: a large region characterized by a specific type of climate and certain types of plants, animal and soil communities. Terrestrial biomes: geographic distribution of terrestrial biomes corresponds closely with, variation in climate, temperature, precipitation, roughly defined by the distribution of vegetation in response to climate and soils, plants respond to climate change, but also influence climate. Soil: foundation of terrestrial biomes, soil is a complex mixture of living and non-living material, very important, part of nutrient and water availability for plants which affects their growth. Major biomes: biomes are where they are because of. Moisture and temperature: tundra, boreal forest, temperate forest, temperate grassland, mediterranean woodland and shrubland, desert, tropical savannah, tropical dry forest, tropical rain forest, mountains, marine oceans, freshwater lakes/rivers. Tundra: geography, arctic tundra rings the top of the globe (arctic circle) Lots of species migrate: large mammals, caribou, musk ox, bears, wolves, small mammals, arctic fox, weasels, lemmings, ground squirrels, birds, ptarmigan, snowy owl, migratory species.
