BIOL201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Signal Transduction, Asteroid Family, Apoptosis
Document Summary
Office: biosci building b101 hours: monday: 1:00-2:30, th 12:00-1:30. To sense and responds to the environment outside the cell. Flight or fight response: adrenal gland (on top of kidney) release a hormone (epinephrine) all throughout the bloodstream so that it can act all over the place through the body. The signal goes to different locations and we get different responses. Liver: break down glycogen (storage of glucose)- getting energy. Because the signal goes everywhere it is referred to an endocrine response. Pre-test: when you receive a cut on your finger, this stimulates the local release of signaling molecules to call in immune cells as a defense against infection. This type of signaling is an example of: paracrine signaling. Paracrine signaling: refers to the release of a signal in a local area. The signal is not going everywhere such an endocrine signal. (local release) Inflammatory response to a finger cut: hormone stimulates leucocytes in bloodstream .
