Document Summary
Molds - rapidly growing & asexually reproducing fungi responsible for producing fuzzy growth of hyphae on the surface of organic substrates. Not a taxonomic group; yeast is just a form of unicellular fungi. Asexual reproduction; pinches off bud cells from the parent cell ( budding off ) Some fungi species can either live as yeast / hyphae depending on the availability of inhabit liquid / moist habitats nutrients. Decomposers break down complex organic compounds inorganic (mineral) forms. Contribute to nutrient & co2 recycling by releasing carbon & nitrogen from dead tissues. Most fungi in soil live as decomposers of plant matters. Play a more important role than bacteria in breaking down lignin (wood) >90% of fungal partners are asco- & basidio- ~25,000 species" of lichens their relationship is so tightly linked that they are often called as one single species. Mutualism with plants mycorrhizae represent mutualistic symbiosis of plant roots & fungi.
