Document Summary

Ecdysis: process of molting the cuticle in order to grow. The cuticle is the non-living outer layer of skin. Only particular regions are hardened, which are called sclerites when shaped like plates. There is unsclerotized parts of the animal, which makes them exible. Below the cuticle is the epidermis, which is the living tissue that is made up of cells that secrete substances that lead to the cuticle. The three layers of the cuticle are, endo, exo, and epicuticle. Very ne ducts run from the epidermis to the top of the cuticle. Apolysis: separation of the epidermis from the cuticle. The epidermis starts to secrete uids that helps it to grow. A new cuticle is formed, but then the old cuticle has to go. Moulting: the process that starts long before there is any external evidence of skin shedding. 3)a thin protective layer is deposited between the moulting uid from the epidermis.
