Document Summary

Embryo in gametophyte tissues in parent sporophyte wrapping= seed. Seeds range in size from minute orchid seed to a gigantic coco-de-mer. The gymnosperm life cycle: the mature tree is the diploid (2n) sporophyte. Sporangia are located on scale-like leaves (sporophylls) in clusters (cones). They have di erent spores, which is referred to as heterospory. Heterospory: megasporangia and microsporangia (on the same or di erent trees). Pollination represents another drastic change in evolutionary strategy. Pollination is the transfer of pollen to the part of a seed plant containing the ovules. In non-seed plants, single-called sperm requires water to swim through (usually short distances). In seed plants, the entire male gametophyte is carried inside the pollen grain. Wind or animals will transport the pollen, it can travel large distances, and there is no need to live near a moist environment because it isn"t necessary to have a lm of water for transportation.
