Document Summary
Biol 107 - lecture 5 - macromolecules part 4. Function is to store and transmit genetic information. Lacks an oxygen at 2"(two prime) carbon of ribose. One chromosome is one molecule of dna. There are many types of rna (trna, rrna, mrna, etc) The monomer that makes up the nucleic acids. Five carbon sugar in a pentagon shape. Are numbered clockwise starting at the far right carbon with the fifth carbon making up the hoch2 on the left. C1 is the site of base attachment. C2 is +/- and oh (2" oh) C3 has an oh attached (3" oh) C5 has the po4 attached (5" phosphate) In dna c and t pair together. In rna c and u pair together. Pair together in both dna and rna. Similar to proteins, the bases in nucleic acids have directionality (5" to 3") This directionality is maintained in the polymer. Nucleotides connect between the 5" po4 and the 3" oh.
