Document Summary
The light reactions convert solar energy to the chemical energy of atp and nadph. Thylakoids transform light energy into chemical energy of atp nadph. Pigments are molecules that absorb visible light. Wavelengths that are not absorbed are transmitted. Structure of chlorophyll molecules in chloroplasts of plants. Chlorophyll b broadens spectrum used for photosynthesis. Carotenoids absorb excessive light that can damage chlorophyll. When a pigment absorbs light it goes an excited but unstable state. When excited (high energy) e-"s fall back to the ground state, energy can be released in the form of photons of light (fluorescence) or heat. If illuminated, a solution is isolated chlorophyll will fluoresce , giving off red light and heat. Chlorophyll (in thylakoids) is associated with proteins that di vert the excited electron. Kinetic energy is transformed into potential energy. This transformation uses a complex of pigments and proteins called a photosystem. A photosystem consist of a reaction-center complex surrounded by light-harvesting complexes.
