2000 human languages have < 1000 speakers. Or human that grew up being abused and etc. Deaf kids if not taught sign language will invent own. Language - a set of arbitrary, but conventional, symbols which are combined in a rule-like way and through which meaning is conveyed. No reason why we used this over another. Rules help tell us how symbols are connected. Want to change mental state of other people/animal. How sentence meaning is represented in the mind. Study relationship of language with the structure of nervous system. Language and sound are not the same thing. Wording it differently does not change comprehension of the meaning. Situation model situation experienced by what we heard (may include a lot more than what we actually heard) Study of sound systems in a language. Changing of a phoneme creates a different word with different meaning. Study of word formation and word structure. Everything we know about words inside our head.
