Immigrants needed for labour especially for dirty labour (oil) At this point, america didn"t really need to import anything but people they had a lot of production happening right in the country. Lots of chinese immigrants are in california starting to bother the good folks that have been there longer. Cali gov"t wanted to crack down on the immigrants, but they wanted federal help. No more chinese immigrants allowed to come in. Child labour to an extent people lose their eyes against the laws. Horrific conditions in the mines and factories/long working hours. Slums develop people are trying to survive any way they can. Sometimes would shut down to avoid it and leave people out of work. Often had no problem beating or shooting someone that pressed for unions. Domestic violence and violence in the streets. Possibility of losing jobs due to word getting out about people"s drinking, violence. Morals and efforts of hard working christians get rewarded.
