Government organization established right before the end of the war. Purpose was to help the freed people. 3 legged stool educational, political, economic. Once people could read and write, it would open up jobs and opportunities. Howard was the head of the bureau, but turned out to be corrupt too trusting of blacks. Was put in place because he had a warmth towards blacks, but he knew nothing about administration. One main goal of the freedmen"s bureau was to build a lot of schools. Southerners (black and white) needed more land. Plantation owners were given their land back in an attempt to get them to rejoin the union. Blacks ended up renting land from plantation owners and worked for them as farmers got very little profit from the crop they got to keep, but the land owner got the most. Take public land and give it away to poor people and blacks.
