Common Resources
Resource: Anything we get from the living or nonliving environment to meet our needs and wants.
(defined in human terms)
1. Perpetual = inexhaustible - therefore cannot run out.
E.g. sun, wind, flow of water.
2. Non-renewable = finite supply
E.g. Natural gas, coal, lithium, gold
3. Potentially renewable = can be renewed by natural process. (time scale matters)
Trees (can be restored through photosynthesis), wildlife, crops
Impacts of Using Resources
Natural growth = below renewal capacity
Maintenance = at renewal capacity
Decline = above renewal capacity (most common)
Alteration = change in composition
Pollution = threatens health

Tragedy of the Commons ~ Garret Hardin (1968)
Example, Herdskeeper adding animals to the herd.
-Tragedy is that "Freedom in a common brings ruin to all"
Common Resources - resources for which exclusion is difficult and joint use involves
subtractability.
Tanslation : 1. Open Access 2. My use takes away from your potential use.
1. Extraction -- consuming resources; fishing forestry, space (land)
2. Emission into Resource -- consuming buffer capacity; atmosphere, waste disposal, noise, pollution
