Called on all artists to paint modern art, not the unrealistic fantasy that were popular at the time. Unreal, inaccessible extractions that no longer have anything to teach, or say to modern society: society and people had changed so much. Learn to recognize what could be heroic and long lasting. Importance is no longer defined by an abstract critical influence: different set of criteria applies. Can be determined: i) chronologically, ii) stylistically. Form becomes important: content becomes less important, pushed to the background. Napoleon loved it so much he purchased the painting. Manet considered to be an immoral artist who was a danger to society: challenged all the visual conventions that artists had been using. First movement: artists forget about the past, become engaged in the present . Manet: observational, impartial perspective into modern urban life. Denote a type of quality in artists who break with the mold of the past in form, and attitude.
