Study led by a uofa graduate student in nutrition (with professor support). A systematic approach of talking to experts, using standardized de nitions and questions in the survey, pre-testing the survey, (convenience) sampling, analyzing and reporting results. 58 interviews completed the survey in 2013/14. Respondents were: 60% female, 50% undergraduate, 47% international (17% of undergrad and 35% of grad are intl), income from loans, research assistantships and scholarships, 24% have children under 18. Food desert populated, typically low-income areas with limited access to nutritious foods (including supermarkets), could be due to distance > constraints on access. Food swamps good access to bad food. Unhealthy foods being more readily accessible than healthy. Personal ability to cope with living in an area with limited food service depends upon socio-economic factors (ex. riverbed - cant walk to the store, but everyone has a car)
