Anthropology in history and the explanation of cultural diversity. Age of exploration/discovery (15th-17th centuries) started to see an increase in european traders/sailors searching for gold/other resources o: better boats went longer voyages; encountered many people with different physical features. Biological race idea develops, these people also had different behaviors= different culture. These were totally different peoples, no way were they related o: periods of initial global mapping: map new lands, people and places, reshaping the worldview- presented new opportunities; first time acknowledging different people. Age of enlightenment (17-18th centuries: science, measuring/quantifying things was extremely important/viable: now you can, age of reason: recognize things. new found rational thoughts replaced traditional explanations. Empiricism began to shape the world; we could measure things, challenged religion, beliefs and traditions. Race was used as a useful category thing. First world fair: displayed all types of exotic things and people, put on explorers ships and then displayed o o.
