Practical de nition: canada contains people from many cultures = multicultural. Ideological de nition: no, multiculturalism is about accepting all cultural variation as part of canadian culture. Reality: canada is a pluralistic ( melting pot ) society some cultural variations are accepted, but values of the dominant group prevail. What steps have been taken to eliminate racism in canada: international declaration of human rights. Includes a declaration for the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination. Contains no legally binding set of rules and often does not contain enforcement mechanisms. Concept of human rights is considered by some as a form of colonization some countries do not favour the idea of universal rights: multiculturalism act and policy. Commits the government to preserving and enhancing the multicultural identity and heritage of canadians while working to achieve the equality of all canadians.
