Document Summary
Displacement and assimilation: as european colonies became larger, cooperation with aboriginals was not necessary aboriginal nations were relocated/scattered to become assimilated. Either assimilate into european culture or relocate to new land. The colonization of the new world was justi ed by arguing that europeans would make more productive use of the lands. Aboriginals lived off the land, but europeans were farming argued foraging, Shing, and hunting can be done anywhere but farming cannot (aboriginals wanted to share, europeans wanted to own all of it) Lack of recognition of aboriginal diversity from the beginning has created problems that have lasted until today: christianity and assimilation. Missionaries used any means to convert (save) aboriginals to christian values and culture. Jesuits saw their work as a ght against satanic forces (some extremists resorted to torture and brainwashing to convert, others more gentle) The church was given land and given free reign to assimilate aboriginals.
