An estimated 300 - 800 different ethnic groups coexisted while only. 100 of cially recognized; purpose: groups of republics chosen by who"s the strongest, most loyal, who used to rebel or not . Each republic contained a variety of ethnic groups, most of which had no of cial recognition and few rights; purpose: try and force them to assimilate.
