The four-field approach has recently fallen apart, especially in the united states, mainly because the various fields are having troubles working with others in different anthropological fields. This may be because of disagreements on various topics. One of the problems in this field is inferring what frameworks apply to the artifacts, simply because the artifacts are the only physical evidence in archeology. There can be many different opinions on what an artifact can mean. The study of language: structural linguistics: interested in the basic structure of languages, and how various languages relate to one another, sociolinguistics: study of linguistics in society, historical linguistics: studying the etymology of words. The study of contemporary cultures: participant observation, ethnography, ethnology. As in all sciences, both natural and social: Social theory: explanatory without being falsifiable, not s(cid:272)ie(cid:374)tifi(cid:272), a(cid:374)d that"s okay, we will consider this at more length later in the term, ex: we have a conscious and sub-conscious mind.
