ANTHR101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Femur, Australopithecus Anamensis, Australopithecine
Document Summary
From lectures 13 and 14, placed together to make it more cohesive. General characteristics: small brain (350 cc to 450 cc) Larger than the disputable hominins: reduction of front teeth. Allows for easier chewing of tough foods (seeds, tubers). Large teeth may not have been needed because hands and tools could tear the foods: still sexually dimorphic, possible osteodontokeratic culture, using naturally occurring things as tools, eg. Lamekwi (3. 3 mya: found rocks that could be tools, the markings indicative of stone tools (wear patterns) are absent, multiple species of australopithecines existed at one time. If they found an injured or sick animal, they might have killed it for food: probably scavengers. Gave clear evidence that they walked upright and had similar feet to modern humans: the smaller set of footprints matches in size to the famous a. afarensis skeleton lucy, theorized that that set was female.
