From lectures 8 and 9, placed together to make it more cohesive. The study of monkeys to help understand early human ancestors. Why is it relevant: relatively recent common ancestor, we share more characteristics with primates than with other mammals, our early ancestors evolved in an environment similar to the ones primates live in now. Primates are mammals: feed young with milk, covered in hair/fur. Incisors-canines-premolars-molars on one side of mouth: 2-1-2-3 or 2-1-3-3, primates have retained all types of teeth. Lack of specialization in teeth and diet: will/can eat a wide variety of food (almost all are omnivores) Neck down: prehensile hands and feet with pendactility, grasping hands and feet each with five digits, opposable thumb and big toe (except humans, retention of the collar bone, all (cid:373)a(cid:373)(cid:373)als had it origi(cid:374)ally (cid:271)ut (cid:373)ost (cid:862)lost(cid:863) it. Lack of collar bone grants greater stability for running on four legs: allows for greater range in motion.
