Document Summary

James vi was the son of mary queen of scots and lord henry darnley. He would succeed at 13 months, after his mother forcibly abdicated the throne. He was baptized roman catholic by mary, but was given a very protestant education. He was known to be a great intellectual. In his raising, many intellectuals helped to teach him. This included george buchanan, a man who had a very traditional sense of how to rase a child, which included beatings. Thus, he grew up in a harsh, protestant climate. He himself wrote all sorts of treaties and tracts in order to become a strong monarch. He helped to get the witch hunt going in scotland with his ideology of demon worship, for example. He also wrote on the divine right of kingship. The king james bible was also named after him. His minority ended by the age of 16.
