English 3310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Shoe Buckle, Convulsion, Laurence Sterne
Document Summary
Born in ireland, but after cambridge settled in england. Unlike many of the authors in this course he lived most of his life in yorkshire, a rural community. He was to some extent, irreverent as a clergymen due to his large usage with sexual innuendo and the like. This was a difficult but wildly popular book in 1759 in five instalments, and make him very popular. It is episodic with a basic plot, but there is a lot of digression. It was deemed a bit bawdy, and as a result he did want to vindicate himself a little bit. However, people at the time read a lot of religious material, and he did write a lot of sermons. It has a basic plot sequence, but is not overly cohesive, and is very episodic. It is a picaresque narrative which originated from spain.
