Document Summary
S social structures, systems, and how they impact the individual. This is the approach of structural social work. Understanding how social structures might impact the lives of people we see. How injustice and oppression create and/or heighten the challenges people face in their daily lives. Examples:// alberto abusing his wife, but what about the fact that he is working many jobs to make ends meet, can"t get social assistance etc. (the effects of social structures) You can look at it as medicating the individual but not looking at the structures that apply when coming out of being depressed. Reduces blaming the client and centering problem-solving on the clients lack of ability to take control over their own lives (critically examines power relations in the worker-client relationship!) ways we can work from an anti-oppressive and/or structuralist approach. Challenge oppressive policies and practices in our workplaces (not all of us can do is because one could be directly affected by the policy)
