Theories exist to help explain how and why paricular phenomena happen as they do. Tools that enable us to make sense of the world. They are systemaically developed from exising knowledge and tested against empirical evidence. Not one theory out there to explain everything goal is to ind the most appropriate ones. Classical they didn"t write on educaion but their work has been applied to it: durkheim 1858-1917 structural funcionalism. Industrial revoluion + democraic reform (american and french revoluion stressed the idea that people need to develop their individual talents, religious isn"t as important any more so where are people geing their morals from [social norm]) = individualism. Main funcions of educaion: social solidarity, social rules, division of labour. Raionalizaion rise of science (less god is the answer) Enlightenment period, age of reason church is declining because are beginning to quesion things, increase in science (which beneit the people invenions to make people"s lives easier)
