• Structural functionalism: division of labour is central to how societies work and how
social relations are organized
• Critical Theory: Capitalism governed by profit produced through class structure

Mistake only a sociologist could make:
• Social engineering: fixing the ‘other’
• Ex. the race problem: apartheid
• Creation of utopias: over-determining the revolution

Apartheid as Applied Sociology (1945):
• Scientific analysis of the race problem in South Africa
• Solution: state to force segregation into racial communities
• Unequal allocation of resources based on developmental stage
• Critique: imperialist response to protect white privilege
