Chapter 5: analyzing social class; power and identity in class-based society. Capitalism as a system of social relationships that are defined by our labour: what work we do and for how much. Yet power and self-worth is also defined by status: occupational prestige, leisure activities, appearance. Social relations more complex than labour performed. Socio-economic status more accurate measure: life chances/ political influence/ social prestige. Large middle class: result of unions and access to credit. The good life" 1950"s 1970"s: golden age of capitalism. Statuses are assumed to be signs of class: cars, clothing, vacations, suntans. Status hides structural inequality and assumed a classless society. Social relations: child conflict, homicide, imprisonment, social capital, trust. Human capital: child wellbeing, high school drop outs, math and literacy scores, social mobility, teenage births. Health: drug abuse, infant mortality, life expectancy, mental illness, obesity. At least the war on the middle class is going well. What does this war look like: traumatized workers.
